Job Functions

 

  • Prepares financial statements and statistical data reports pertaining to various departmental capital and current projects
  • Reviews, analyzes and reconcile encumbrances, budget variance reports and cost detail records related to departmental capital and current projects.
  • Prepares and calculates subsidy claims and ad hoc financial and statistical reports to the Provincial and Federal Government.
  • Performs and maintains accounts receivable functions including bank deposits and reconciliation, preparing, reviewing, posting and reconciling journal entries.
  • Performs calculations in order to process period end accruals for various expenditures.
  • Prepares working papers and processes period end and year-end closing entries.
  • Reviews General Ledger expenditures and revenue accounts, processes reclassification and reallocation adjustments, and reconciles expenditures.
  • Prepares statements for reporting to Management and Divisions.
  • Analyzes monthly budget variances. Provides financial analysis, claims and other information to the Divisions.
  • Creates/executes ad hoc financial system reports for analysis purposes.
  • Liaises with Finance Department for processing vouchers, retrieving documents and dealing with other accounting related issues.
  • Assists on projects and assignments.
  • Monitors relevant Provincial statutes and regulations, City by-laws and/or Council direction for any changes.
  • Invoices customers and prepares periodic accounts receivable reports, such as, age analysis reports.
  • Verifies and enters payroll data in SAP and follows up on any payroll related enquiries.
  • Investigates, analyses and takes corrective action on erroneous accounting transactions.

 

 

Key Qualifications

 

  1. Completion or present enrolment towards completion of a professional accounting designation and/or an equivalent combination of education and senior experience in accounting.
  2. Considerable experience in financial accounting and/or financial reporting in public or private sector.
  3. Considerable experience in the analysis, investigation and processing of transactions relating to accounts receivable.
  4. Considerable experience analyzing financial data and preparing financial reports.
  5. Considerable experience using office systems including Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  6. Considerable experience using SAP or an equivalent financial information system.

 

You must also have:

 

  • Working knowledge of the City’s accounting procedures, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Corporate Financial Control Purchasing by-laws, and Federal and Provincial legislation relevant to the position.
  • Thorough understanding of account structures and integration between various modules within SAP financial system or an equivalent accounting system.
  • Knowledge of financial and internal controls.
  • Strong interpersonal skills (excellent verbal and written skills) with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff and public.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work under time constraints and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage work with minimal supervision and complete number of tasks simultaneously for multiple management staff.
