Major Responsibilities:
- Provides daily care of animals including feeding, watering, basic grooming, cleaning, etc.
- Maintains good sanitary living conditions for animals including sanitizing and sterilizing tools and equipment for animal care.
- Observes and reports illness or injury to the Veterinarian/Foreperson. Treats minor injuries and/or assists veterinarian in administering health care.
- Administers medication, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, and vaccinations for animals under the direction of the Veterinarian. Applies flea treatments and parasite controls.
- Maintains animal records. Logs vaccinations, medical testing, and procedures, and health/well being of the animal.
- Transfers animals from one enclosure/shelter to another as necessary. Travels to various shelter areas to deliver and pick up animals.
- Responds to inquiries from public.
- Assists with making minor repairs when necessary, including grading of paddocks, repairing fencing, animal feeders and shelters.
- Operates heavy machinery including tractors, front-end loaders, snowplows, and forklifts.
- Performs demonstrations about the animals and animal related activities to park visitors.
- Facilitates classes in conjunction with program staff for paid participants, including teaching young children the proper handling of various animals on the farm.
- Informs Foreperson/Supervisor of changes in animals¿ health and wellbeing. Assists in making decisions on enrichment programs, animal diets, and medical care required.
- Monitors inventory of feed and other supplies and informs Foreperson/Supervisor when supplies are low.
- Monitors new animals arriving at the farm during quarantine period.
- Monitors and cares for animals during birthing or during animal illness. Reports complications to Foreperson/Vet/Supervisor.
- Performs perimeter checks and informs Foreperson/Supervisor of any issues.
- Captures sick or injured wildlife and coordinates their transfer to Animal Services for ongoing care and public safety.
- Safely disposes of dead animals, including wildlife found on property.
- Participates in media events.
- May be required to perform or assist in the euthanasia of animals.
Key Qualifications:

- Considerable experience in large and small animal care
- Considerable experience in handling a variety of large and small animals
- Experience in maintaining sanitary living conditions for animals
- Must posses and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class ‘G’ Drivers License and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements
