Major Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Animal Services, the Animal Cadaver Responder performs the following duties:

• Operates vehicles or equipment driven on the road or on road allowance for the function of removing and collecting animal cadavers, domestic and wildlife, from public roadways, spaces, and private property on roads driven under 60 kilometers per hour.
• Responds to service requests and dispatched calls and priority collection requests.
• Uses equipment to load and unload animal cadavers of various types and sizes.
• Transports deceased animals to an assigned Toronto Animal Services animal shelter.
• Completes necessary paperwork and maintains records of collection location, animal type, and size.
• Performs work in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner.
• Responds to public inquiries.
• Completes reports (i.e., Collision/Incident Report) using various computer software.
• Performs daily Pre-Trip Inspection Reports and identifies vehicle and equipment malfunctions.
• Performs minor non-mechanical repairs to equipment and maintains vehicle and equipment in a clean, sanitary, and tidy condition.
• Performs other duties at this wage grade level or lower including labouring type duties, maintenance, and cleaning activities when not operating assigned vehicle or equipment including the various pieces of maintenance equipment.

Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to the following:

1. Completion of a secondary school education or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
2. Experience operating a pick-up truck or similar vehicle, including use of winches and loading tools.
3. Experience using tools and equipment such as shovels, small mechanical machinery (e.g., snowblowers), and hand tools in a safe and efficient manner.
4. Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and meet City permit and operating standards.
   
   

You must also have:

• Ability using basic computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Chameleon (or similar dispatch and tracking software).
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, complete forms accurately.
• Proven ability to complete daily reports and logs and maintain accurate records related to animal retrieval and transport.
• Excellent judgement and situational awareness when responding to service calls involving animal cadavers.
• Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism when dealing with the public, particularly in sensitive or emotional situations.
• Physical ability to perform repetitive lifting and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• A commitment to safety protocols, public health considerations, and respectful service delivery.
• Must be able to work outdoors and be exposed to varying climate conditions such as extreme heat and extreme cold weather for extended periods of time during the course of the shift.
• Must be familiar with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations for the safe performance of his/her duties and responsibilities or capable of obtaining familiarity of same.
• Ability to orient new staff on assigned vehicles/equipment.
• Ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position.
• Ability to deal courteously with the public.
• With the appropriate safety precautions, must be able to tolerate noise, and odorous conditions.
• Good physical condition, strength and agility are required for all aspects of the position, including long amounts of time spent driving, handling, and lifting animals, including deer, large dogs and heavy articles weighing up to 25 kgs.
• Ability to work rotating shifts (day, afternoon, night, weekend, and holidays) May be required to do shift/overtime and weekend work in conformance with the Collective Agreement.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, take initiative, exercise discretion, judgment work under time constraints and meet deadlines, to effectively carry out the various duties and responsibilities of this position, with minimal supervision and direction.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
