The Social Development, Finance and Administration division (SDFA) drives transformative change to achieve stronger, safer, and more resilient and equitable communities and neighbourhoods in Toronto. SafeTO, the City of Toronto's 10-year Community Safety & Well-being Plan was unanimously adopted by City Council to drive 26 actions across 7 strategic goals. To advance SafeTO's objectives and the SafeTO implementation Plan, the Community Safety & Well-Being Section is hiring one (1) Community Resource & Engagement Worker to support TO Wards Peace and the Community Crisis Response Program.

 

Job Summary

The role of the Community Resource & Engagement Worker is to support the development and implementation of effective community engagement approaches, innovative communication tools, social media strategies and targeted investment geared towards youth violence prevention, intervention and interruption initiatives. The incumbent will be coordinating online social media activities and initiatives within TO Wards Peace and other initiatives from across the Community Safety & Well-being Section with a special focus on youth violence prevention initiatives.

 

Major Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the online component of the Violence Prevention Toronto inter-sectoral approach to city wide intervention, interruption for prevention of incidents of violence.
  • Provides culturally competent support to youth, caregivers and groups, facilitate access to various resources (i.e.) booking spaces, facilitators, and making referrals to appropriate trauma informed supports as needed
  • Supports the development of contracts, assists and may conduct programmatic and community wide risk assessments and safety planning to ensure safety and effective service delivery of the division's programs/initiatives.
  • Supports the development and implementation of effective community engagement approaches, innovative communication tools, social media strategies and targeted investments geared towards youth violence prevention initiatives.
  • Supports online social media activities and initiatives of the various units and programs of the Community Resources Section with a special focus on youth violence intervention and prevention initiatives.
  • Identifies emerging community and youth needs through building profiles and community/youth needs assessments and participates jointly in problem resolution which includes group work and conflict resolution, in collaboration with City staff, youth and community agencies.
  • Works with communities and service providers to develop and support innovative and culturally competent community crisis prevention, interruption and intervention services and strategies and connects them to broader community development efforts and City strategies.
  • Develops and maintains social media strategies, accounts and databases aimed at addressing youth violence; and monitors engagement to optimize content.
  • Identifies service gaps and provides advice, consultation support, information and referrals to potential community leaders and to service providers and community organizations.
  • Designs, develops and presents trauma informed, culturally and population appropriate training tools, community outreach materials and education sessions and program for diverse audiences.
  • Establishes methods and practices in support of communities to build capacity, mobilize and advocate on their own behalf regarding community safety issues.
  • Integrates diverse youth engagement, family supports and culturally specific approaches to community crisis prevention, intervention and interruption work.
  • Assists with providing support and direction to youth hired as online violence interrupters/e- mediators and provides capacity building sessions, appropriate links to mental health supports and other relevant resources, as required. .
  • Facilitates the development of organizations and community groups to support community safety development, risk mitigation, crisis intervention and prevention supports (e.g. crisis management protocols, prevention-based initiative development, assisting with policy development, and capacity building for staff).
  • Supports the development of funding proposals with and for community groups, agencies and networks by sharing disseminated knowledge of resources needed, with all levels of government and key funding institutions.
  • Acts as a resource regarding community risks, intervention and interruption practices and models for City staff, politicians and other external stakeholders
  • Identifies and acts on current and anticipated community needs and issues providing regular updates through briefings, e-bulletins, reports, program documentation, and other appropriate means.
  • Organizes and coordinates established training sessions for youth on the technical aspects of social media, grief, loss and trauma and identifies emerging trends and effective strategies for responding to problematic posting behaviors.
  • Researches, gathers information, creates reports and ensures timely, accurate and effective responses and service to internal and external stakeholders, including residents, community agencies, Community Resources staff, and City divisions.
  • Interprets and communicates relevant policies, programs and initiatives to the community and identify opportunities through community engagement and observing trends to build capacity and support community based/led solutions.
  • Updates related databases and ensures that records pertaining to community crisis interventions, interruption and prevention activities are accurate.
  • Attends virtual and in person offsite meetings and events as required

 

Key Qualifications

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  • Extensive experience working with community engagement initiatives and agencies to engage youth most vulnerable to victimization, criminalization and/or justice involved and to support equitable outcomes in communities.
  • Extensive experience facilitating trauma informed and culturally competent support, access to trauma supports for individuals and communities (e.g. identify and book safe spaces, facilitators, and making referrals).
  • Extensive experience in data collection/evaluation, web development and implementing social media and network platforms for engagement and collaboration among youth, residents and community groups.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective collaborative networks across communities, with communities, agencies and other stakeholders, to support safety and wellbeing strategies, developing recommendations and strategies to influence policy.
  • Experience developing strategies, supporting City funded groups, grassroots programs and action plans for resident-led initiatives.
  • Experience with the usage of a variety of software packages including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel spreadsheets and all on-line social media platforms.

 

You must also have:

  • Knowledge and commitment to working within an anti-oppression/equity framework.
  • Familiarity with the principles of civic engagement in municipal government/structure.
  • Excellent group facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent communication skills that foster effective relationships with young people, the public and staff to effectively respond to the conflicting agendas of the stakeholder.
  • Excellent time management, report and proposal writing skills.
  • Knowledge of issues facing equity-seeking groups in communities across the city.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and independently.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Familiarity with government legislation in the area of Occupational Health and Safety
