Join the Toronto Public Service as an Educator, Outreach & Public Programming within the City Clerk's Office.
The Educator Outreach & Public Programming designs, implements and supports public education tours, programs and events.
Major Responsibilities:
- Maintains and utilizes knowledge of current ministry curriculum.
- Designs and implements public education programs (including guided tours of City Hall for school groups and the general public) and events, promotional materials, exhibits and web content for a wide variety of media events, including audio, video and web-based elements. Develops and supports internal and external partnerships to help meet shared goals for public education and engagement with local government.
- Develops, delivers, schedules and evaluates City Hall's educational programs for a variety of groups in response to changing educational and demographic requirements. Devises new outreach initiatives and community partnerships to promote awareness of City Clerk’s Office programs and services and help meet shared goals for public education and engagement with local government.
- Integrates new curriculum into the development of programs for elementary and secondary students.
- Aligns existing programs to meet changing educational curriculum content and standards for civics and strategic goals with Council-adopted goals for equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation including under the Reconciliation Action Plan, Confronting Anti-Black Racism Action Plan, Toronto Newcomer Strategy, Toronto Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy, and others. Establishes and maintains relationship with various client groups and stakeholders, including teachers, members of Council, senior leadership, other civic engagement practitioners, community organizations, and the public including youth, newcomers, and members of equity-deserving communities.
- Liaises with and recruits community partners.
- Researches, organizes, coordinates and participates in committees, consultation sessions, workshops, lectures, exhibit openings and other special events, for the public, professionals, stakeholders and volunteers.
- Co-ordinates and prepares content for special events including Newcomer Day, Doors Open, meetings, lectures, workshops, and other opportunities to engage and share information with large and diverse public audiences.
- Provides creative and technical design advice, discusses graphic materials layout and design requirements for exhibits, website design, promotional materials and reference purposes, and produces and prepares electronic design files for production.
- Coordinates work schedules, print and design production, liaising with consultants, contractors and other outside parties.
- Requests and reviews quotations, produces scope of work documents for third party contractors including for promotional and event supplies.
- Analyzes draft material and designs to produce and prepare archival graphic arts projects, including promotional flyers, pamphlets, exhibit panels, posters and layouts, for print, web, multimedia and other channels of delivery.
- Creates content and updates for the City Clerk's Office online presence including website and social media sites, providing information on civics information, public education events and activities.
- Writes, researches, and assists in the preparation of various briefs, reports and, presentation materials for consideration by senior management.
- Provides a research and reference service, researching, compiling materials.
- Responds to inquiries from the public, city staff, elected officials and the media.
- Develops, maintains and analyzes statistical reports on tour activity and other programming and monitors website usage, providing data on a monthly basis. Creates and maintains contact, participation and invite lists for special events.
- Conducts volunteer training and coordination for Doors Open Toronto.
- Purchases and maintains exhibition supplies.
Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Post-secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function, such as education, communications, public engagement, event management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable experience with the design and delivery of educational and/or outreach programs for diverse audiences such as students of different ages, newcomers, members of equity-deserving communities, and the general public.
- Considerable experience with planning, coordinating, and implementing tours or workshops, or events or other civic engagement initiatives.
You must also have:
- Excellent organizational, time management, and improvisational skills.
- An ability to communicate effectively, be outgoing, and demonstrate excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, providing a positive and memorable visitor experience.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively with diverse client groups and stakeholders to support community engagement and partnership development.
- The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients at all levels, including City Councillors, senior managers, and other Divisions.
- The ability to exercise good judgment, discretion and political acuity.
- The ability to work in a team setting and independently, and to plan, prioritize, organize, and complete work effectively to meet deadlines.
- Comprehensive understanding of City government, organizational structures, council proceedings, and current political issues.
- Flexibility to support the section and division in their functions and activities i.e., assisting section staff with logistics and activities, coordinating meetings and attending functions as required to provide on-site assistance.
- Ability to apply and embed an equity lens, including reconciliation principles into program design and delivery.
- Ability to support the Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity and respectful workplaces.
- Ability to work variable hours and weekends as required, and travel for work as required.
