Major Responsibilities:

 

  • Performs duties independently and as a Crew Lead in the execution of Horizontal/Vertical Geodetic Surveys as well as various other surveys.
  • Directs, instructs, and trains staff in all aspects of geodetic surveying including First Order Horizontal/Vertical Geodetic survey work, methods, procedures, and operations.
  • Conducts surveys using various optical and digital survey equipment for a variety of programs and projects pertaining to City facilities and infrastructure.
  • Ensures projects are carried out in accordance with City of Toronto "Geodetic Survey Standards" and "Engineering Surveys Standards", specifications and procedures.
  • Establishes geodetic monument locations, obtains permissions, and installs benchmark/horizontal markers on various structures.
  • Processes horizontal, vertical and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations using a variety of software.
  • Performs adjustments on survey observations and networks.
  • Maintains and updates horizontal and vertical geodetic control databases.
  • Coordinates field crew activities and work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Effectively gathers information and relays to supervisor, inspector, designer or the project engineer, as required.
  • Searches, evaluates and analyzes designs, reports, specifications and any documentation related to projects. Indexes, files, and references geodetic control survey records.
  • Conducts work hazards identification, implements strategies to control Health & Safety concerns and responds promptly to address variable working conditions.
  • Ensures the use of safety equipment and adherence to safety procedures and regulations in accordance with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, other related Health and Safety legislation and City of Toronto Health and Safety Policies.
  • Checks and audits consultant and contractor work for completeness, accuracy and compliance with City standards.
  • Operates, maintains, and tracks a variety of mechanical, digital, analogue, wireless, computerized and other equipment and systems.
  • Oversees survey vehicles and their contents to ensure proper maintenance.
  • Performs survey work and prepares and checks data using the City's Integrated Control Application (INCA).
  • Provides progress reports on work and completes time sheets and attendance reports.
  • Performs and checks manual and computerized calculations (e.g. geodetic control points, first order benchmark runs and elevations).
  • Liaises with, investigates and responds to inquiries from the public, surveyors, consultants and contractors related to aspects of the City of Toronto's horizontal and vertical geodetic control network.
  • Searches, evaluates and analyzes existing geodetic control records, notes and plans. Effectively performs complex survey work to support topographic, pre-engineering data collection, construction layouts, audits, stake-outs, as-built surveys, hydrographic soundings and geodetic control network maintenance. Records and makes detailed field survey notes of same.
  • Effectively plans, organizes and prioritizes work with minimal supervision.
  • Travels safely to various work locations in a timely and efficient manner. Must operate a City vehicle.

 

Key Qualifications:

 

  1. Graduate in Surveying, Geomatics or Civil Engineering Technology or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Considerable field experience leading horizontal/vertical geodetic survey crews.
  3. Experience performing survey computations and adjustment of survey observations using least squares adjustment programs.
  4. Extensive experience using global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), digital and optical survey equipment.
  5. Considerable experience using automated office technology to download, perform computations on and adjust survey observations and data.
  6. Must possess a Driver's License, Class "G" or better, valid in the Province of Ontario and be able to maintain same.

 

You must also have:

 

  • Advanced knowledge of the theory of geodetic surveying, Geodetic Survey Standards and skilled in its applications.
  • Knowledge of the principles of geodetic survey technologies.
  • Ability to operate survey equipment (e.g. hand held computers, robotic total stations, global navigation satellite systems, electronic measuring devices, theodolites, levels and related equipment).
  • Ability to perform manual and computerized mathematical calculations used in geodetic control surveying.
  • Ability to produce legible and accurate geodetic control field survey notes and plot plans from same.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, plans and records.
  • Ability to provide direction, organize and schedule activities of a survey crew.
  • Ability to compile, maintain and store survey data and records.
  • Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, with the public, consultants, engineering staff and other representatives.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and regulations that apply to this work.
  • Must be physically able to operate various hand and power tools, lift and move various pieces of equipment and work in inclement weather.
  • Must have demonstrated record of regular attendance.
  • Must be able to maintain a valid City of Toronto “Equipment Operator’s Permit”.
  • Must be able to perform shift work.
