Job Description

Reporting to the Supervisor of Design in the Roadway Section of the Engineering & Construction Services Division, the successful candidate will provide engineering designs for the preparation of multi-disciplinary municipal linear infrastructure construction projects in the City of Toronto’s Capital Works Program.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Administers, prepares and coordinates requirements related to detailed engineering designs, contract drawings, maps, sketches and reports for both existing and proposed infrastructure components such as sewers, watermains, watercourses, stormwater facilities, complete street concept, roadways, TTC Track allowance and other municipal infrastructure using/utilizing Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software (Microstation & InRoads) in support of the Capital Works Program.
  • Prepares and verifies/checks design requirements, specifications, detailed quantities, tender documents, reports, and technical documentation related to the Capital Works Program.
  • Conducts field investigations and studies for a variety of planned proposals, programs and projects.
  • Provides advanced technical support to engineers for the planning, design and tendering of municipal linear infrastructure projects.
  • Receives work /directives from Project Engineers, Supervisors and/or Civil Engineering Technologist.
  • Prepares and conducts training and demonstrations for users of CADD software (Microstation & InRoads)
  • Provides guidance and functional direction to staff.
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders such as operating divisions, Utility companies, developers, public, contractors, consultants and architects etc. at various stages of the design process.
  • Investigates and responds to project inquiries from the surveyors, consultants, contractors that relate to the design, standards and CADD information.
  • Provides support to Project Engineer during construction in a timely manner to ensure that construction issues are addressed in order to avoid delays
  • Carries out engineering office functions such as assistance with preparation of budget and tracking of expenditures.
  • Ensures that all designs are carried out in accordance with various City of Toronto engineering design standards, specifications, and procedures.
  • Ensures the proper use of safety equipment and adherence to safety procedures and regulations by conforming to the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, other related Health and Safety legislation and City of Toronto Health and Safety Policies.
  • Plans, organizes and prioritizes work on multiple projects with minimal supervision to meet Capital Works Program delivery objectives.
  • Researches, evaluates and analyzes designs, reports, specifications, engineering records, notes, plans and any documentation related to projects.
  • Performs and checks all manual and computerized calculations (e.g. grades, elevations, cross-sections, drainage area, pipe capacity and inverts).
  • Performs and/or reviews research and calculations and analyzes technical data.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  • Graduate in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable design experience in complex municipal infrastructure including roads, sewers, watermains and other linear municipal infrastructure.
  • Considerable experience utilizing computer software (e.g. Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD), Bentley Microstation, Inroads, Microsoft Office Suite) to produce alignments, profiles, cross-sections, area/volume reports in a design environment.

You must also have:

  • Ability to review, interpret and critique engineering drawings, reports and documents, e.g. plans and profiles, surveys, specifications, etc.
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant regulations, statutes, standards and practices related to design of linear infrastructure such as Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Provincial Standards Specifications (OPSS), Ontario Provincial Standards Drawings (OPSD), Transportation Association of Ontario (TAC), Ministry of the Environment (MECP).
  • Advanced understanding in the principles and application of Civil Engineering theories, methods, and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction practices and methods.
  • Advanced analytical skills with the ability to perform manual and computerized mathematical calculations in an engineering environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with consultants, contractors, colleagues and other City employees at all levels and members of the public.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to provide work direction and training to other staff.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize and work with minimal supervision.
  • Advanced problem solving, project coordination skills and the ability to exercise independent judgement in dealing with technical matters.
  • Possession of a valid Ontario Driver's License Class “G” and be eligible to write and pass the tests required to receive a City driver’s licence needed to operate a city vehicle.
