Job Description

As an Engineering Technologist Technician 1 in the in the Traffic Systems Planning, Design, and Capital Coordination unit, you will have an opportunity to play a lead role in the design, construction, and maintenance of traffic signals and other Intelligent Transportation Systems (Variable Message Signs, Accessible Pedestrian Signals, CCTV, traffic systems, traffic controllers, communications systems, vehicle/pedestrian detection) components across the City. You will work with consultants and contractors to successfully and efficiently oversee assigned projects. 

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates during monthly meetings with various capital and operational delivery project managers to track project spending
  • Prepares tenders and administers contracts for the installation, construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure to ensure contracts are carried out in accordance with City standards, specifications and procedures.
  • Conducts surveys, investigations, and studies for a variety of proposals, programs, land development applications and projects pertaining to the City's facilities and infrastructure.
  • Conducts field inspections and evaluates condition of facilities and that proper traffic control procedures are in place.
  • Assists the Engineers or carries out technical work for the planning, design, tendering, construction and inspection of municipal infrastructure.
  • Assists with the preparation of budget related documents (e.g. Transportation funding authorizations, business cases, variance reports, etc.) and tracking of expenditures utilizing various tools (e.g. SAP).
  • Prepares drafts of documents, contracts, specifications and agreements for the Engineers or Supervisor.
  • Develops, maintains and monitors programs and systems.
  • Performs design and drafting work, prepares and checks map data and products using Computer Assistant Design and Drawing (CADD) input information.
  • Checks and provides progress/inspection reports on the work of contractors and developers to ensure use of safety equipment, adherence to approved designs, procedures, regulations, statutes, specifications etc.
  • Performs and/or monitors tests and submits results for analysis.
  • Liaises with Utility companies, developers, public, contractors, etc. on pre-construction meetings, to resolve problems etc.
  • Performs and/or reviews research and calculations and analyzes technical data.
  • Coordinating and administering meetings related to the work

 

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Post-secondary education in an Engineering / Engineering Technologist program or an approved equivalent combination of education and experience
  2. Experience in engineering technology, specifically in the principles and practices of electrical traffic control and management devices, and/or Intelligent Transportation Systems and/or street lighting. 
  3. Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" driver's license with the ability to obtain a City's Driver's permit and daily use of a personal vehicle

 

You must also have:

  • Teamwork and prioritization skills to direct the work of others and concurrently coordinate multi-discipline projects.
  • Accountable with the ability to plan, prioritize and work independently in a remote setting with minimal supervision.
  • Fundamental knowledge of traffic signals and Intelligent Transportation Systems.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, electrical codes, ESA, Ontario Traffic Manual, Highway Traffic Act and OPSS documents.
  • Computer skills with extensive knowledge of various software (e.g. MS Office, Outlook, GIS, Work Management Systems, Financial Systems and MicroStation).
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, technical design drawings, specifications and contract documents.
  • Ability to perform quality assurance / quality control inspections, oversight and direction to the work of others, and concurrently coordinate multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Analytical and report writing skills to effectively organize records and data and prepare sound technical reports, standards, specifications and calculations.
  • Interpersonal, customer focus and communication skills to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders and the public.
  • Experience managing various municipal projects, contract procurement, performing electrical site inspections, contract supervision and administration
  • Able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work remotely, beyond regular business hours, weekends and inclement weather conditions
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Construction Act and the regulations that apply to this work including traffic control, WHMIS, etc.
