Major Responsibilities:

  • Leads mapping projects and directs staff in the maintenance of DMOG (Digital Map Owners Group) mapping as per received "as-built" drawings and CUMAP (City of Toronto Utility Mapping) as it relates to the City's Street Furniture Program, traffic signals, sewer and water networks.
  • Prepares training course materials and conducts training courses and demonstrations for users of mapping systems.
  • Trains and directs the work of staff
  • Develops, maintains, and monitors systems and macros to configure and integrate CAD, GIS and database information.
  • Performs mapping work and prepares and checks map data and products related to as-built utility infrastructure using CAD and GIS.
  • Liaises with utility companies, developers, public, contractors, consultants, and internal City staff to investigate and respond to inquiries, request information, and resolve problems.
  • Provides digital and hardcopy maps, drawings and data sets as required
  • Performs quality control and quality assurance of products and services associated with the identification, location, and mapping of public utilities using software applications to analyze technical data.
  • Performs and/or reviews research and prepares draft reports recommending data acquisition and project methodologies.
  • Trains and directs staff to review drawings and certificates to ensure compliance with City by-laws and policies.


Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Post-secondary education in Surveying or Civil Engineering Technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  2. Extensive experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
  3. Extensive CADD and GIS experience related to the drafting and mapping of various utilities including road, water, sewer, telephone, cable, gas, electricity, etc.
  4. Extensive experience in the operation of CADD and GIS workstations including Microstation, Bentley Map, Oracle Database, MS Access, Arc GIS, FME.


You must also have:

  • Ability to train others in the operation of CADD/GIS workstations including Microstation, Bentley Map, Oracle Database, and MS Access.
  • Advanced knowledge of practices related to automated mapping.
  • Ability to read and interpret standard utility drawings (water, sewer, telephone, cable, gas, electricity, etc.).
  • Knowledge of projection systems and datums.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in public relations matters as required.
  • Ability to work effectively in a project team environment.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to establish effective and strong working relationships and trust with multiple stakeholders including staff, client divisions, outside agencies, politicians, and other orders of government.
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with Federal and Provincial regulations and requirements, including the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
