Reporting to Supervisor of Design for Streetcar Way & Special Projects in the Transportation Infrastructure Section of the Engineering & Construction Services Division, the successful candidate will provide engineering design for the preparation of multi-disciplinary municipal linear infrastructure construction projects in the Capital Works Program

Major Responsibilities:

  • Investigates, researches and conducts studies. Collects and analyzes data and prepares reports related to record drawings, standards, specifications and other project documents. Assists in ensuring designs are carried out in accordance with various City of Toronto engineering standards, specifications and procedures.
  • Prepares sketches, technical designs and elevations related to the design and construction of municipal infrastructures such as roads, sewers and watermains. Reads and interprets technical drawings.
  • Ensures contractors are performing construction in accordance with permits, safety regulations and according to tenders and specifications and ensures the proper use of equipment and adherence to safety procedures and regulations by conforming to the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, other related Health and Safety legislation and City of Toronto Health and Safety Policies.
  • Transforms information from plans into digital data. Maintains and updates data including editing various technical drawings including base plans, design plan and profiles, to support the planning, design and tendering of municipal linear infrastructure projects.
  • Collects samples for analysis by laboratory, inspect conditions of roads, sidewalks, pipes etc for proper function and condition. Conducts field investigations and evaluates site conditions. Operates equipment and performs field work.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of mechanical, digital, analogue, wireless, computerized and other equipment to perform e.g. surveys, draughting, calculations, diagnostics, repairs, studies.
  • Prepares and checks map data and products using Computer Assistant Design and Drawing (CADD). Maintains engineering records including updating and filing capital project records, utility circulations and design related information.
  • Prepares and edits technical drawings in CADD environment such as base mapping, contract and as built drawings.
  • Collects, maintains and analyzes data and prepares reports making recommendations. Performs and checks manual and computerized calculations (e.g. grades, elevations, cross-sections and inverts).
  • Responds to complaints and inquiries.
  • Procures goods and/or services as required including assisting in the preparation of draft technical and/or tender documents including quantities.
  • Receives work direction from Project Engineers, Supervisors and/or Civil Engineering Technologist.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Graduate in Civil Engineering Technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Experience using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) (e.g. Bentley Microstation), and other computer software such as Word, Excel, Outlook etc.
  3. Experience in design of linear municipal infrastructure.

You must also have:

  • Ability to operate CADD computers and understanding CADD principles.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Civil Engineering principles, theories, methods and best practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of all relevant regulations, statutes, standards and practices related to design of linear infrastructure such as Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Provincial Standards Specifications (OPSS), Ontario Provincial Standards Drawings (OPSD), Transportation Association of Ontario (TAC), Ministry of the Environment (MOE).
  • Knowledge of construction practices and methods.
  • Ability to work effectively with consultants, contractors, colleagues and other City employees at all levels and members of the public.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize and work with minimal supervision.
  • Problem solving, project coordination skills and the ability to exercise independent judgement in dealing with technical matters.
  • Ability to travel to various work locations and construction sites in a timely and efficient manner.
