Reporting to the Manager of Epidemiology and Data Analytics, the Epidemiologist provides epidemiological expertise and support to programs in Toronto Public Health, including advice and support related to the collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting of surveillance data, for assessing community health status, environmental health indicators and communicable disease control and prevention. Acts as a consultant on epidemiological, statistical, and evaluative methods as they apply to communicable diseases.
- Initiates, plans, designs, organizes, implements and evaluates epidemiological research on health status factors that affect the health of the population in Toronto and the need for and delivery of public health services
- Develops and analyzes epidemiological and other related indicators and research strategies Facilitates the use of epidemiological evidence by providing and integrating community health status information in program and service planning, monitoring and evaluation
- Identifies emerging issues and trends related to communicable disease, environmental health and community health status and proposes appropriate responses
- Applies quality assurance methods for epidemiological analysis and reports as appropriate Performs epidemiological analysis, interprets data, and summarizes relevant findings in reports for internal and external stakeholders. Uses appropriate computer applications and presents results in an understandable format including charts, graphs, maps, etc.
- Chairs or participates as a member of internal work groups and committees and represents the Medical Officer of Health on external work groups and committees
- Liaises with provincial ministries, health units, research and information organizations, other City Departments, external agencies and partners to provide access to current epidemiology and community health status knowledge and for collaborative epidemiological research
- Provides consultation, training and support to Toronto Public Health and other City staff on communicable disease control, environmental health, community health status information, epidemiological, statistical, survey and evaluative methods
- Identifies new opportunities, technologies, and methods for communicable disease and environmental health surveillance, including reporting, data analysis and dissemination mechanisms.
Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Master's degree in Epidemiology, or a related discipline, or the approved equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Considerable experience in a public health or related agency as an epidemiologist, preferably with expertise in communicable disease and/or environmental health epidemiology.
- Considerable experience using statistical analysis software such as SAS, R, and/or STATA, and programming languages currently used to collect, analyze and report epidemiological data in Ontario.
- Experience with extracting and analysing iPHIS data, using Cognos Report Net (CRN).
You must also have:
- Knowledge of current public health issues, epidemiological concepts, and quality assurance principles related to communicable diseases; experience in environmental health considered an asset.
- Knowledge and skills in epidemiological and statistical methods and applied research.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to meet competing priorities.
- Ability to communicate effectively, to prepare written reports, and make oral presentations.
- Ability to direct and work effectively with staff and to utilize positive problem solving solutions. Ability to use Check Market (or other online survey tool) Tableau (and other data visualization software) would be an asset.
- Training in and/or experience related to quality/quality improvement.
- Ability to work in a high-pressure environment and respond to competing priorities.
- Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and weekends depending on operational requirements.
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
- Ability to travel to various Toronto Public Health offices, as required.
