Information on hours of work:

  • There are no guaranteed minimum hours per pay period.
  • Hours of work will be on an as required part-time basis only, Monday to Friday.
  • Candidates must have a minimum of three days of substantial availability per week between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
  • One of the days of availability must be either a Monday or a Friday.  Five day availability is preferred.
  • Usual shift start times are between 8:00 am and 9:30 am, Monday through Friday.
  • Shifts averages are 3.5 – 5.5 hours in length depending on the centre scheduled.
  • Shifts may be scheduled in advance or assigned through same‑day on‑call scheduling.
  • Training sessions may be scheduled evenings or weekends.

 

Information on location 

  • Candidates will not be assigned a base location
  • Candidates must be available to work at a minimum of 15 Toronto Early Learning & Child Care Centres

 

Pre-placement requirements: 

As a condition of employment, all successful candidates will be required to:

  • undergo a pre-placement medical assessment including proof of immunization and tuberculosis screening, in accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014
  • provide a current Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check  
  • provide a valid standard First Aid certification including infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Major Responsibilities:

  • Prepares food and beverages by cleaning, peeling, mincing, cutting, chopping, mixing, assembling, portioning, measuring ingredients, packaging and labelling, etc.
  • Follows written food production resources (i.e., menus, special diet and food substitutions lists, food product labels) in the preparation of lunches and snacks.
  • Portions food according to regular and special diet menus for children with life and non-life-threatening allergies, intolerances, religious and cultural observances, portion control and serving temperature guidelines for all age groups.
  • Receives lunches and snacks daily from the caterer, and from the grocery vendor and approved parent supplied foods following the verification checklist. Reports shortages and discrepancies to the supervisor as occurring.
  • Checks, records, sorts, stores and retrieves food; cleaning; paper and other supplies to and from proper storage areas. Lifts and carries items. Maintains storage areas.
  • Takes temperatures of food, refrigerators, freezers and dishwasher and reports temperatures that are not in the proper range and malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Rotates food according to First-in/First-out (FIFO) method and expiry dates; maintains regular inventory and emergency supplies; and informs supervisor on purchasing requirements.
  • Loads carts with dishes, utensils, containers and trays necessary for service and delivers to classrooms for lunches and assigned snack times.
  • Collects and disposes of leftovers and waste from classrooms after lunch and assigned snack times.
  • Cleans and clears tables at the start and completion of meals and removes all dirty dishes and flatware, pots and pans to washing area.
  • Cleans and sanitizes kitchen equipment and appliances such as ovens, steamers, skillets, etc. Washes, cleans and sanitizes all kitchen counters, tables, bins, refrigerators, freezers, dishwasher, shelves, carts, trolleys, and any equipment used in the preparation of food and in serving areas.
  • Selects and mixes all required cleaning solutions according to WHMIS Legislation and Health and Safety Codes and wears PPE where indicated.
  • Washes all dishes, flatware, pots and pans using dishwashers, and or sink during food preparation, before and after lunches and assigned snacks
  • Washes linens such as aprons and towels used for food preparation and service in the washing machine.
  • Sorts and disposes of garbage according to the recycling program in effect. Bags, removes and transports garbage to disposal areas.
  • Maintains garbage cans and bins in a clean and sanitary manner.
  • Notifies supervisor or designate of necessary maintenance repairs and any unsafe conditions with kitchen equipment and within kitchen and other areas.
  • Locks doors, windows and/or rooms to ensure area is secure.
  • Attends staff meetings, in-service training and special committees as required.
  • Participates in food and nutrition programming activities in the classrooms with the children. Answers telephones and takes messages according to City of Toronto telephone practices. 

 

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to: 

  1. Possession of a valid Food Handler Certificate completed through a local public health unit or approved commercial provider and recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Health.
  2. Experience in preparing and serving food for large groups in an institutional, hospitality or other food service setting.

 

You must also have: 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a standard First Aid certification including infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Understanding of the nutritional care needs of children (0 to 4 years of age) following various menus, diets; food preferences, intolerances and allergies; cultures; theme holidays and special events.
  • Understanding of Canada’s food and nutrition guides e.g. Canada's Food Guide, Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide - First Nations, Inuit and Métis and Nutrition for Healthy Term Infants: Recommendations from Six to 24 Months.
  • Strong ability to work effectively independently and as a team member and accurately follow instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and clients.
  • Ability to use computers, access and complete online training modules.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to support and implement change reflective of the City of Toronto's Action Plan to Confront Anti-Black Racism.
  • Ability and willingness to provide service that enhances and respects a work culture that values diversity and is inclusive of all clients and staff.
  • Ability to perform various cleaning duties.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position. Operate, lift and move various equipment, supplies and other heavy items.
  • Ability to lift food, dishes and small appliances/carry children of various ages and weighing up to 20kg.
  • Ability to assist with and adhere to Health & Safety practices including cleaning, sanitizing, disinfecting, etc.
  • General knowledge of the Child Care and Early Years Act and the Child and Family Services Act with the ability to apply such legislation in the workplace.
  • General knowledge of Toronto Public Health guidelines relating to child care environments.
  • General knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, the Sanitation Code and the legislation related to this work.
  • A valid email address, phone number and ability to communicate on a regular basis through email and phone.
  • Availability for on-call scheduling.
  • Ability to travel to and work from multiple locations.
