Our People & Equity Division is looking for an HR Consultant, Occupational Health & Safety, to join the Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness team.


As an HR Consultant, Occupational Health & Safety, you will provide direct health and safety consultancy services to assigned divisions. This will see you working as part of a team of health and safety and disability management professionals providing a range of expertise, consultation, and interpretation of legislation, collective agreements, existing OH&S policies, programs, and processes.

 

What will you do?

  • Provide a leadership and coordination function and support in divisional occupational health and safety programs, including Joint Health and Safety Committee development, training and certification, incident investigation, and reinforcement of the City's Internal Responsibility System
  • Ensure timely and effective delivery of Occupational Health and Safety services to ensure that operational health and safety, divisional, and corporate objectives are met
  • Provide consultation and guidance to managers, supervisors, and staff on a day-to-day basis regarding health and safety matters, including legislative compliance, industry best practices, hazard identification and assessment, as well as safe work procedure development and implementation
  • Provide consultation on the assessment of work-related hazards and the development of prevention strategies
  • Provide support to the Manager and/or Senior Consultants on a range of projects and day-to-day health and safety matters
  • Liaise with divisional staff to provide guidance and assistance in all areas of health and safety
  • Participate in corporate initiatives, committees, and project teams in support of and/or to lead the development of policies, programs, and procedures related to the City's Occupational Health and Safety programs. Responsible for planning, implementing, advocating, promoting, and monitoring of safe work practices
  • Produce and analyze reports on Occupational Health and Safety activity to provide recommendations to client divisions
  • Provide guidance on the assessment of Occupational Health and Safety training needs for staff, and assist in the development, assessment, and/or delivery of health and safety-related training that meets the identified training needs
  • Build and maintain relationships with the City's union locals who are responsible for overseeing the health, safety, and wellness of their members

 

What do you bring to the role?

  • Post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in a related discipline (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety), or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considerable experience in an Occupational Health and Safety function in a public or private sector organization
  • Experience in health and safety consultancy
  • Experience with safety-related legislation, including the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, and other health and safety legislation applicable to the City of Toronto
  • Experience in developing and delivering training programs focusing on health and safety
  • Experience with preparing and analyzing data reports related to incident analysis
  • Ability to conduct research, summarize results, and provide user-friendly information and data reports to support projects and initiatives
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, negotiation, and human relations skills
  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgment, and work independently or as a team lead or team member
  • Ability to identify needs; initiate, coordinate, and manage projects and implement solutions in response to client issues
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with People & Equity staff, managers, employees, elected officials, members of the Toronto Public Service, JHSC members, and union officials
  • A thorough knowledge of employment and related legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Employment Standards Act), equity principles, contractual obligations, and sound human resource practices
