Major Responsibilities:
- Leads projects, organizes and directs the day-to-day activities of unionized staff.
- Oversees & inspects the work of unionized staff to ensure compliance with City standards & specifications, and health & safety.
- Performs tasks required for the installation, operation, general maintenance and repair of equipment, roads and sidewalks, not requiring the services of a licensed trade worker.
- Marks areas on roads, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, etc./ to be repaired/constructed by crews.
- Schedules material sampling for laboratory testing.
- Performs administrative and processing activities as required, such as updating service requests and work orders in EWMS Maximo & TMMS, and manual records.
- Ensures proper traffic control set-ups in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Operates and performs minor maintenance on various types of motor vehicles and equipment relevant to the duties of the position including tractors, backhoes and other specialized equipment, including operating power equipment and specialized tools.
- Assigns work, establishes maintenance schedules to meet prescribed standards, instructs, trains and orients staff in all aspects of maintenance and provides feedback on performance.
- Requisitions supplies and services and maintains records of equipment inventory and other assets.
- Ensures that the work location, equipment and supplies meet health and safety standards and completes all requisite inspections.
- Reads and interprets plans; performs quantity takeoffs and layout of projects.
- Schedules and arranges delivery of materials; equipment; and services of contractors and trades staff to ensure timely and efficient completion of projects
- Attends all training provided by the City related to the discharge of job duties.
- Ensures that appropriate action is taken to deal with incidents, problems and emergencies in accordance with divisional policies and procedures.
- Interprets and works in accordance with all legislation, codes and regulations related to the responsibilities of the position.
- Communicates and ensures good customer service to community groups, members of the public and other staff. Investigates public complaints and takes appropriate action.
- Responds to inquiries from City staff, contractors, other municipalities, businesses, public and 311.
- Completes written reports, daily logbook and activity sheets, and forms as required, including providing statistical information concerning tasks completed, staff issues, accident/incident reports, time sheets and facility use.
- Contacts and meets with representatives of the utilities to locate services, vendors (suppliers) and keeps thorough records.
- Performs other related work and specific projects as assigned.
Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Considerable experience in performing general maintenance, construction and repairs to buildings, parks, mechanical equipment and services using a wide range of equipment, with the ability to provide estimates of necessary work repairs required.
- Experience with road maintenance procedures and materials used.
- Experience in reading and interpreting drawings and specifications and in overseeing work performed by city staff.
- Experience with inspecting construction activities.
- Experience in the safe and efficient operation of all vehicles, equipment, hand tools and power tools related to the duties of this position.
- Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "DZ" Driver's License and must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements.
You must also have:
- Knowledge of the Ontario Traffic Manuals and the Highway Traffic Act.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Legislative Standards and the regulations that apply to this work.
- Knowledge of MS Office software applications including MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, MS Exel and MS Outlook.
- Ability to provide work direction and training to others.
- Working knowledge of operation and maintenance, including relevant equipment, materials, procedures and preventative maintenance programs related to road operations and maintenance of equipment.
- Working knowledge with TMMS and/or MAXIMO work management systems.
- Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to resolve customer issues, conflicts and complaints in-person, by telephone and through written correspondence.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, mechanical equipment and to make minor mechanical repairs.
- Ability to prepare and complete all relevant forms, schedules, checklists, daily activity reports, etc.
- Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and carry out tasks to meet deadlines.
- Ability to deal courteously with the public and staff and solve problem situations, taking appropriate action.
- Ability to maintain Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
- Must be able to work shifts, weekends and overtime as may be required at various locations.
- Must be physically capable of performing required duties.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
