Reporting to Manager, Research, Analysis & Policy, the Library Information Officer is to maintain library services in Toronto Public Health library and maintain information resources.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Compiles, classifies, and catalogues information and materials. Determines subject content and assigns appropriate headings and classification numbers to identify the material.
  • Reviews and assesses variety of print and electronic publications, identifies sourcing for electronic resources and provides costing information.
  • Assists with placing orders for approved materials and catalogues incoming materials, including document delivery requests.
  • Answers requests for information from TPH staff, external libraries etc. Researches and compiles materials in answer to reference inquiries and literature search requests.
  • Distributes materials as appropriate. Arranges inter-library loans as needed.
  • Assists in the preparation of policies and procedures including the compilation of training manuals and subject bibliographies.
  • Evaluates and analyses library information needs and resources and makes recommendations. Provides continuous updates to Divisional staff of issues by scanning publications and extracting information relating to policy, programs, and issues.
  • Maintains automated cataloguing system and databases, including audits and batch updates as needed.
  • Conducts regular and annual inventory of library materials.
  • Produces internal newsletters/bulletins on relevant materials and publications.
  • Circulates materials to staff and maintains statistical records and reports regarding library loans, usage, and operations.
  • Maintains organization of physical library collection. Assists with movement and shifting of physical library collection.
  • Provides staff training and development regarding the use of in-house library catalogue, electronic bibliographic databases and internet searching.
  • Undertakes, organizes, and manages special projects.
  • Provides input into the library strategic, operational, and work plans related to TPH’s library information services.

 

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Post-secondary education in library and information science or library and information studies or the equivalent combination of education and/or related experience. 
  2. Considerable experience providing library information services to a team.
  3. Experience working in a library environment. 
  4. Experience supporting users conducting research with online resources, i.e., searching bibliographic databases such as MEDLINE or PubMed, and grey literature sources. 
  5. Experience with library information management systems or library automation systems.  

 

You must also have:

  • Proficiency in using various software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and databases)
  • Ability to effectively communicate (written & verbal)
  • Knowledge of diversity of bibliographic and non-bibliographic databases required to address public health’s multidisciplinary areas
  • Ability to multi-task with proven organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to perform duties requiring independent sound judgment, initiative, and discretion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work within a team of professionals.
  • Knowledge of Web applications as they pertain to Library work would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with Soutron Library Management System is desirable.
  • Ability to lift 15 kg move and shift library collection (books and journals) and other related materials. Must be able to lift 15 kg.
  • Health Sciences library experience is an asset.
