Toronto Animal Services is hiring a Project Coordinator (Indigenous Wildlife Coexistence) to help advance the City’s Wildlife Strategy through public education on peaceful coexistence with urban wildlife, coordinated efforts to reduce human-wildlife conflict, and culturally informed engagement.


Job Summary

In this position, you will lead and support education, outreach, and advisory initiatives that promote wildlife coexistence across Toronto. This role is responsible for coordinating project work that strengthens biodiversity, supports habitat conservation, and reduces human-wildlife conflict through an Indigenous-informed lens. Working closely with communities, internal divisions, and external stakeholders, the Project Coordinator will play a central role in raising awareness, informing policy directions, and fostering respectful, sustainable relationships between people, wildlife, and the land.


Major Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and coordinate divisional and corporate projects, including strategic initiatives, service improvements, and public engagement programs.
  • Implement detailed project plans and recommend policies and procedures regarding program-specific requirements.
  • Develop project-related outreach and engagement plans to maximize internal and external stakeholder participation.
  • Coordinate logistical requirements for various projects, including staffing, budgeting, vendor relations, and procurement processes.
  • Supervise, motivate, and train project support teams to ensure effective teamwork and high-quality performance.
  • Administer and monitor project budgets to ensure expenditures align with approved financial limits.
  • Research and analyze industry trends, policy developments, and operational needs to optimize project planning strategies.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including corporate divisions, government entities, community groups, and vendors.
  • Coordinate and implement corporate initiatives, such as service transformation projects, policy updates, and performance monitoring.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, AODA, and corporate policies.
  • Develop reports, key performance indicators, and post-project evaluations to assess effectiveness and areas for improvement.
  • Represent the division at corporate meetings, committees, and planning teams.
  • Assist in rolling out business process improvements and organizational change management initiatives.
  • Lead cross-functional teams for unique projects and campaigns, including recruitment, training, and budget oversight.
  • Coordinate the implementation of corporate software applications relevant to project management and operational planning.
  • Organize corporate staff initiatives, such as training sessions, service improvement workshops, and knowledge-sharing programs.
  • Develop and coordinate records management and reporting for divisional initiatives.
  • Support the implementation of Toronto's Wildlife Strategy and promote Indigenous-led approaches to urban wildlife coexistence.
  • Coordinate public education and community engagement efforts related to urban wildlife, biodiversity, and habitat stewardship.
  • Foster meaningful collaboration with Indigenous communities to co-develop culturally relevant wildlife outreach and policy initiatives.

 

Key Qualifications

  1. Post-secondary education in environmental studies, ecology, Indigenous studies, project management, policy development, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Lived experience as an Indigenous person and a demonstrated understanding of Indigenous perspectives, values, and approaches to environmental stewardship and wildlife coexistence.
  3. Experience in education, outreach, or policy development related to environmental or wildlife-focused initiatives.
  4. Experience in project coordination, including managing multiple initiatives, timelines, and deliverables.
  5. Experience supervising staff and coordinating public or community engagement initiatives.
  6. Knowledge of wildlife and habitat conservation, particularly in urban environments.
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills for outreach, reporting, and collaboration with diverse communities and stakeholders.
  8. Proven ability to establish and maintain partnerships with Indigenous communities, internal City staff, external stakeholders, and the public.
  9. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including conflict resolution.
  10. Familiarity with applicable legislation and policy frameworks, such as the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Occupational Health and Safety Act, and City of Toronto policies.
  11. Ability to work in high-pressure environments, managing competing priorities and tight deadlines.
  12. Demonstrated knowledge of animal welfare and pet care, and the ability to work comfortably in an animal shelter environment and around animals.
  13. Willingness to work evenings and weekends, and travel across Toronto to support engagement efforts.

Note: 1300 Sheppard Avenue West (alternate locations such as 146 The East Mall or 821 Progress Avenue may be considered based on operational requirements and successful candidates’ location.
