Reporting to the Manager of the Sexually Transmitted Infections Program, the Public Health Nurse provides case management, partner notification, disease surveillance services, sexual health clinic services: 

  • Provides assessment, counselling, education and referral to individuals diagnosed with an STI and completes partner notification, according to the program policies and procedures and program and operational plans of TPH, the Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice and the standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Assesses and evaluates incoming laboratory reports on cases of sexually transmitted infections
  • Consults with and provides information and follow up with physicians regarding laboratory results, prescribed medication and dosage, follow up examinations and control requirements. 
  • Liaises with other health professionals as necessary. Ensures treatment is adequate for the disease. Ensures follow up of contacts.
  • Provides direct care to clients in sexual health clinic settings when assigned
  • Carries out independent home visits and/or clinical services
  • Maintains individual/client records and necessary documentation according to the policies and procedures of TPH as well as the Standards of Practice set out by the College of Nurses
  • Represents TPH STI program on assigned community networks and committees
  • Mentors, and provides orientation and training to new staff, students and peers
  • Collaborates and liaises with members of the sexual health program and community agencies to identify health needs and participates in the development plans to meet those needs Prepares, submits and presents activity reports, data and other reports, e.g. such as documentation, time and activity data collection
  • Appears and gives evidence in court and inquests when subpoenaed in consultation with management and legal services
  • Participates in professional conferences and workshops. Makes presentations to health professionals/colleagues. Interprets the STI program to
  • professionals in the community Participates in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation/research of public health programs and initiatives which may include advocacy for healthy public policy, social marketing campaigns, community mobilization, health education and skill building
  • Participates in the divisional planning process including the development of work plans based on operational program plans
  • Supports TPH response to emergencies requiring Public Health assistance

 

Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
  2. Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Province of Ontario.
  3. Experience in interviewing and the follow up of people (and their partners) diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI/HIV).
  4. Experience in assessing and evaluating laboratory reports and providing consultation and advice to physicians on the treatment and follow up of patients with STIs/HIV.
  5. Experience working with the integrated Public Health Information System (iPHIS) computer system or comparable health database.
  6. Possession of a valid Class "G" Ontario Driver's License and access to a vehicle.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain good public relations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include, overtime, shift work, evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience working in a Sexual Health Clinic setting is an asset
