Join the award-winning Toronto Public Service as a Public Outreach Trainee within our Economic Development and Culture Division. This position is an important part of Information Services, a portfolio of programs in the Visitor Economy Office that seek to improve visitor experience and cultural/economic impact in Toronto. Public Outreach Trainees are central in delivering direct outreach to welcome and inform tourists, newcomers, and residents and to support people and organizations that work with visitors. We are seeking an enthusiastic, outgoing individual with Toronto knowledge and a passion to connect with visitors.
Major Responsibilities
- Travels to various locations and/or attends special events with staff to distribute and provide information and answer general questions.
- Delivers trailer/equipment and ensures cleanliness of site/equipment.
- Assists with packing, loading, lifting, moving, delivering, setting up, maintaining and unpacking supplies, displays etc.
- Monitors, records and maintains product inventory.
- Distributes and provides information and answers inquiries regarding the City site/equipment.
- Documents events/findings. Attends staff meetings and reports on event issues.
- Assists with assembling and compiling data and information packages. Distributes to events staff.
- Assists in administering surveys, distributing material and collecting and inputting data.
- Assist with organizing and presenting data collected. May utilize various software packages.
- Assists with various office functions.
Key Qualifications:
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Post-secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function (i.e. hospitality, business, marketing, tourism or other relevant field), or an approved combination of education and experience.
- Experience engaging with the public and providing front-line customer service in a marketing or tourism related position or as a promotional representative.
- Experience in performing administration, clerical support duties, or community outreach, community engagement activities/ event planning.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Outlook).
- Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “G” Driver’s License.
You must also have:
- Strong overall knowledge of the City of Toronto including its tourist attractions, cultural institutions and entertainment offerings, neighbourhoods and shopping districts, festivals and events, public transit system and major roads.
- Ability to provide directions by reading and utilizing a map.
- Ability to use technology and computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to research information.
- Outgoing personality and ability to engage the public.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively within a team setting.
- Excellent time-management, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lift/move boxes of brochures up to 50 LBS.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to communicate in multiple languages would be an asset.
- Certification in Standard First Aid/ CPR Level C would be an asset.
- Flexibility to work day, evening and weekend shifts.
- Must be available to work a minimum of four shifts per week, including weekends, although not guaranteed.
- Ability to travel to various locations within the GTA to promote tourism and events
- Experience driving half ton pick-up trucks and willingness to obtain City’s driver permit.
Note: This position may require travel within the city, the ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and work in various outdoor work / weather environments (i.e., heat, sun, rain, etc.).
