About the Division
The Communications Division delivers effective marketing and communications to the public and City staff. Through a centralized approach that nurtures growth and opportunity for its staff, the Communications division focuses on proactive storytelling that puts the City, and its divisions – as partners – at the center. Position Overview:
The Research Trainee (Graphic Design) will support the Public Education, Marketing, and Creative team by assisting in gathering, distributing and compiling research for the development of research-informed visual materials for campaigns and outreach initiatives. Working with senior staff, the trainee will assist in compiling, drafting, and creating digital content and print assets. This role offers hands‑on experience in user‑centred design, branding, and public education while contributing to a collaborative, fast‑paced creative environment.
Major Responsibilities:
- Assists with assembling and compiling design briefs, reference material and creative packages.
- Collects data such as visual and written content by gathering feedback from internal teams, conducting surveys and helping source imagery, branding assets and user insights.
- Travels to various locations and/or attends special events to provide support/on-site assistance to photograph, record or observe environments for creative projects.
- Assists with packing, loading, lifting, moving, delivering and unpacking supplies, displays, marketing materials, creative assets, etc.
- Documents findings. Inputs/retrieves/updates/maintains design-related data, asset libraries and digital content repositories.
- Assists with organizing creative assets and presenting data collected.
- Assists with compiling and consolidation of data content (such as text, images, video clips) for others to analyze/process.
- Assists others with drafting creative documents, content summaries, creative notes, captions, layout descriptions, bulletins and related communications materials and data analysis.
- Assists with maintaining statistics and data relevant to creative projects, branding usage or asset performance.
- Assists with various office functions.
- Answers calls, provides general information, takes messages and directs inquiries to appropriate staff to answer questions/handle requests.
Key Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of any post-secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function (i.e. communications, graphic design, digital media), or an approved combination of education and experience.
- Experience preparing both print and digital designs using Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat) and experience with Microsoft 365.
- Experience in the production of various print and digital design materials, such as fact sheets, reports, posters, presentations, social media banners, digital ads, infographics and animations.
You must also have:
