Reporting to the Program Manager, Planning and Policy Development at Children’s Services, the Senior Digital Content Advisor is part of a team of staff that provides divisional oversight, coordination and direction related to the creation and presentation of digital content across a variety of channels, while championing user needs. The Senior Digital Content Advisor is an exceptional web writer and understands content design and structure, web information architecture, social media content strategy and creation, data and analytics, and a user-centred approach to digital service delivery.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with divisional partners to review, develop and consult on web pages and other digital content, ensuring content and messaging is clear, action-oriented, user-centric and service-focused.
  • Contribute to and apply web content, design, usability and accessibility standards and policies to promote consistency, a positive user experience and a strong and unified City of Toronto brand.
  • Mentor and coach staff to deliver workshops and training for staff related to standards, guidelines and best practices for digital content design and presentation.
  • Analyze and evaluate evidence, data, user feedback and research to focus on user needs and experience, making City information and services easier to find, understand and access.
  • Work with business units across Children’s Services to coordinate digital content and manage corporate web pages, interpreting research, user feedback and analytics to assess web content from an end user perspective, and make content decisions.
  • Provide direction on which digital solutions and approaches to use to meet the needs of users across a variety of channels.
  • Apply strategic-thinking skills about how to provide the best service for the end user.
  • Communicate, influence and build consensus among a variety of stakeholders with competing priorities through regular dialogue and consultation.
  • Research, develop and implement strategies for corporate initiatives and recommend policies, guidelines and strategies related to the effective use of social media and digital channels.

Project Leadership and Relationship Management

  • Supervises, motivates and trains assigned staff on a project basis regarding data gathering, use and analytics, in addition to web communications and management, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, continuous learning and encourages innovation in others.
  • Fosters successful relationships and synergies with divisional staff and staff of divisional partners and agencies through consultation and mediation, participation, presentations and verbal and written communication.
  • Works with various internal and external partners and private sector collectors, disseminators and analysts to collect and analyze data on behalf of the division to support the development of web properties.
  • Provides leadership when working with partners on developing and implementing strategic communications dissemination strategy.
  • When required, manages all aspects of contracts with consultants and contractors engaged in work on data strategies and analysis including preparation of contract documents, tenders, recommendation of contract award, monitoring contractors' progress to ensure that all work is completed efficiently and effectively.

Key Qualifications:

  1. Extensive experience working in a Digital Communications environment for a large public or private sector organization.
  2. Post-secondary education in a discipline pertinent to the job function (communications, journalism, digital/new media) or an approved combination of education and experience.
  3. Extensive experience using a web content management system; WordPress experience is a must.
  4. Considerable experience creating content for the web that is actionable, accessible and usable, and organizing and presenting content to best meet user needs.
  5. Considerable experience developing digital communication policies, strategies and content plans for web and social media.
  6. Considerable experience using data and analytics to make decisions and explain decision-making to senior stakeholders.
  7. Knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  8. Proficient with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Knowledge of Licenced Child Care and its operations

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and manage assignments and workload under tight timelines and competing deadlines.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the proven ability to influence and build collaborative relationships across a broad spectrum of stakeholders.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Knowledge of user experience principles and experience with user testing.
  • Ability to develop and implement web content and design standards and guidelines. Comprehensive knowledge of social media platforms, tools and best practices, as well as ability to develop strategies, policies and guidelines to support appropriate and effective use; Hootsuite Enterprise knowledge an asset.
  • Knowledge of tools, methods and techniques for digital content development, including creating accessible and usable content to meet the needs of users across a variety of digital channels, including the web and social media.
  • Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques and experience using data, research and analytics to design, organize and prioritize content; Oracle Infinity knowledge an asset.
  • Deep understanding of current and future digital trends across all platforms and best practices for optimizing content.
  • Knowledge of accessibility legislation and requirements, and the techniques of diversity outreach.
