Major Responsibilities:
- Prepares tree and shrub purchasing tender documents.
- Provides work direction and training in connection with tree and shrub pruning, planting, safe work procedures and assists with planting.
- Conducts inspections and records information.
- Maintains nursery and inspects and maintains trees by watering, brushcutting, weeding, applying pesticides etc.
- Inspects nursery stock during the tendering process and makes recommendations on acceptance of bids.
- Coordinates shipments of trees with growers, suppliers and staff and maintains an ongoing inventory of tree stock and supplies.
- Prepares reports of the number of trees planted, summary of costs etc.
- Provides advice and attends meetings to discuss tree species selection, availability of species and tree species issues.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
Key Qualifications:
- Considerable experience in tree identification, pruning, planting, silviculture, nursery management, (such as/including but not limited to, nursery inventory and/or quality control assessments), and in directing staff.
- Must have completed nursery management or ecosystem restoration courses from a recognized institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess and be able to maintain a current Ontario Pesticide License with a Landscape or Forestry designation in accordance with the regulations enforced in the Province of Ontario.
- Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements.
You must also have:
- Must have knowledge of the operation of a front end loader tractor, backhoe and roto-tiller.
- Must have knowledge of disease and pest recognition.
- Must be familiar with ArcGIS and Microsoft Excel.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work.
- Must be able to foster and maintain good public relations and customer service with general public and be able to communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
- Must be physically capable of performing required duties.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
