Job Description:

The Fort York Museum Store Attendant provides a wide variety of clerical duties along with exceptional customer service to visitors while promoting and selling products that reflect the history, culture, and programming of Toronto History Museums (THM) and Fort York. Located within the Canteen at Fort York National Historic Site, the museum store offers a carefully curated selection of books, gifts, locally crafted items, and specialty products connected to the heritage of the site. The position also supports online sales through THM’s Shopify store and assists with admissions and front-of-house duties.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs a wide variety of clerical and administrative duties related to customer service and retail operations for the museum.
  • Participates in admissions and retail sales duties for the museum, including regular programs, special events, commercial functions, and group and individual tours.
  • Operates the Museum Store located within the Canteen at Fort York National Historic Site, offering products inspired by Toronto History Museums’ collections, exhibitions, and programming, as well as merchandise reflecting the history and heritage of Fort York.
  • Operates both in-person retail sales and the Shopify online store, including product updates, order fulfillment, and online customer service.
  • Oversees concession preparation, sales, purchasing, pricing, and inventory control.
  • Performs a variety of bookkeeping duties, including record keeping of float, cash transactions, and reconciliations.
  • Participates in security duties for the museum store as required.
  • Answers telephone inquiries, providing general information or referring inquirers to proper sources.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Considerable experience with in-person and online retail operations, including purchasing, pricing, and inventory control.
  2. Considerable experience with computerized inventory systems and Point of Sale (POS) and daily reconciliations, including working with cash, cheques and/or other payment methods such as ActiveNet and Shopify.
  3. Considerable Experience in storekeeping and bookkeeping methods, budget tracking and revenue reports and practices
  4. Experience performing clerical and administrative duties, including receiving payments, data entry, typing correspondence etc.
  5. Experience providing customer service, dealing effectively with the general public and all levels of staff in person, by telephone and in writing 

You must also have:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with the general public and all levels of staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize and perform work independently
  • Experience with the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with procurement/purchasing City of Toronto software (RPGS) and processes an asset.
  • GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) retail sector experience an asset.
  • Experience with the Shopify platform or comparable online sales platform an asset.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and statutory holidays, as required for operations, programming, and events.
