2 Permanent Vacancy - Toxic Taxi (mobile depot)-40 hours/week

This position is responsible for the curbside collection of household hazardous waste. This is a 5 day, 8-hour workday, 40 hour work week, consisting of 4 days working on Toxic Taxi and 1 day at the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) depot.

1 Permanent Vacancy and 1 Temporary, 12-month Vacancy – Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depot (stationary depot)-35 hours/week

This position is responsible for the operation of up to 6 stationary HHW depots. This is a 5 day, 7 hour workday, 35 hours work week, consisting of 5 days working at the HHW depot. You may be required to work on the Toxic Taxi, if needed.

Major Responsibilities:

Household Hazardous Waste Depots:

• Accepts, collects, and handles household hazardous waste (HHW), electronic waste (WEEE), and other designated wastes brought to a HHW Depot and/or collected at curbside through the Toxic Taxi Program
• Determines the identity of chemicals, classifies chemicals into compatible groupings for storage, labels and stores chemicals, and other wastes as received from the public
• Conducts inspections of HHW Depots, conducts daily inventories of HHW received, completes manifests and shipping documents, and takes corrective action to ensure compliance with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) and requirements.
• Interacts with contracted disposal/recycling service providers and communicates with residents on a daily basis.
• Collects and reports statistics, prepares documentation for manifests, shipping and inventory of chemicals and wastes.
• Performs chemical tests to categorize unknown chemicals or materials.
• Provides the public with promotional and educational information through front-line interaction and/or answering inquiries on other solid waste management disposal and recycling options.
• Determines quantities and orders standard material handling items.
• Completes requisitions for supervisor's approval.
• Receives material and checks quantity.
• Directs part-time staff by providing technical/functional instructions on HHW Depot operating procedures.
• Utilizes computer systems to input/track HHW and WEEE information into associated databases.
• Responds to and cleans up chemical and hazardous waste spills.

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

1. A degree or diploma in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering/Technology or Environmental Sciences/Studies or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Experience in the handling and management of hazardous and electronic waste and other waste materials for diversion
3. Experience with computers and software such as Microsoft 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, including familiarity with database and spreadsheet software.

You must also have:

• Knowledge of general, organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry.
• Must be able to lift and carry hazardous and electronic waste weighing up to 44 lbs. continuously during regular duties as well as moving full drums of packed and bulked waste.
• Knowledge and training in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and the Environmental Protection Act and its regulations that apply to this work
• Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the Regulations that apply to this work.
• Must be able to travel to various work locations using own transportation, as required.
• Must be able to work Saturdays as part of the work week as well as shift work.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions.
• Ability to work in an organized and tidy manner.
• Able to work as part of a team as well as work effectively with consultants, contractors, colleagues and other City employees at all levels and members of the public.
